2nd Arc Flash & Isolation Safety Conference - 10th & 11th May 2017 - Manchester, United Kingdom

The 2nd Arc Flash & Isolation Safety Conference was held in Manchester, United Kingdom on the 10th & 11th May 2017. The event offered nine presentations from industry experts from across the world, including a half day workshop from Hugh Hoagland, Founder of ArcWear & Managing Partner at e-Hazard (USA), entitled International Standards for Electrical Safety, NFPA 70E 2012 and Arc Flash PPE Standards from US and EU.

The conference opened with a personal story from Louise Taggart entitled Michael's Story – An arc flash tragedy that could have been prevented, which discussed the tragic events that led to her losing a brother in a preventable electrical accident and how simple and affordable procedures can be implemented to avoid it happening to anyone else. Louise’s presentation was highly received among delegates and was referred to as “hitting home” and a warning to the dangers they face daily in their work place.

Additional topics covered throughout the two days were entitled:

  • Avoiding Arc-Flash Problems in High Availability Data-Centre Facilities
  • Lockout/Tagout: An Integral Part of Electrical Safety
  • Arc Flash Safety
  • Arc Flash: Managing the Risks Associated with Electrical Arc Flash
  • Arc Flash Awareness – Are You Taking Electrical Safety Seriously?
  • Reliable Safe Electrical Solutions

Professor Ian Bitterlin, Consulting Engineer at Critical Facilities Consulting Ltd. opened day two of the event with a half day workshop entitled Safe Isolation in Electrical Power Systems which covered the theory of short-circuit faults and potential arc-flash events, safe working practices and legal requirements in the UK, the need for arc-flash PPE and the limitations for practical tasks that arc-flash PPE create and a how to limit, if not avoid, the need for arc-flash PPE.

The conference was very interactive with audience members invited to ask questions throughout the presentations making for an engaging and collaborative event.
